TMJ Care

The only Oregon TMJ Total Joints Facility

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are problems related to your complex jaw joint. If you have had symptoms like pain or a “clicking” sound, you probably have a TMJ problem. TMJ disorders develop for many reasons. You might clench or grind your teeth, tightening your jaw muscles and stressing your TM joint. Or, you may have a damaged jaw joint due to injury or disease. Whatever the cause, the results may include a misaligned bite, pain, clicking or grating noises when you open your mouth, or trouble opening your mouth wide.

Minimally-Invasive TMJ Therapy

Malmquist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a complete array of minimally-invasive TMJ therapies. The use of arthrocentesis or arthroscopy with growth factors allows for outpatient therapy in patients who are refractory to conservative TMJ therapy such as splints, physical therapy or occlusal alterations of any type. We have a full array of TM joint instruments to manipulate the joint with a minimally-invasive approach. Disc positioning under direct vision is the benefit of this approach. We are the only office with this equipment and operating room suite. You can avoid degenerative joint disease through proactive treatments. Please call our office at Portland Office Phone Number 503-292-8824 and ask to see the latest equipment and treatment options.

Joint Reconstruction

When all conservative methods have been exhausted without relief of the symptoms, Jay P Malmquist, DMD or Michael P Malmquist, DMD can determine if you are a candidate for and perform a joint reconstruction procedure.

To say I am thankful to have found this clinic is an understatement. My first visit Dr had me in tears finally feeling like I could get the help I needed for my jaw. I have spent 5+ years hurting and not knowing what else to do. I now have a plan and know that I will be well taken care of. To have a doctor sit with you and explain in detail what is going on and what needs to be done to help is a rarity. I felt comfortable and welcomed from the first time I walked in the door. Again, I can’t thank you guys enough.

I suffered for years from Migraines and pain in my TMJ. I went to several dentists and oral surgeons in WA state. Finally I was referred to Dr. Malmquist. When I met him I could barely open my mouth to fit my pinky in it and the pain was almost debilitating. He spent time reviewing my diagnosis, answering questions about the surgical procedure I would have. I did not need to think twice, I trusted him and knew he would help me. His financial planner in his office helped with my insurance issues, although ultimately my insurance denied the procedure after several appeals - it was money well spent! I had my TMJ surgery July of 2015. I have not had a migraine since then, I have no bells palsy, very minimal scarring, the range of motion of my jaw is great and I can open my mouth 32 mm. Most importantly; my life is so much better with no pain.

Do to an accident and infections I have had several surgeries to my TMJ's, lower jaw or orthognathic, Wisdom teeth removed, Dental implants, Total TM joint implants all several times. Including braces several times, skin grafts to repair receding gum line and removal of scare tissue to remove poor healing scars. I have worked with Dr. Malmquist for many many years by choice and would work with no one else. Though I have had to have consultations from many doctors though out the Portland area and around America. I would prefer to work with Dr. Jay Malmquist then with any one else in the country. Dr. Jay Malmquist is a wonderful doctor who answers questions and has always answered my questions honestly and quickly. He makes me feel that no question is stupid and that I count to him as more then just a dollar sign.
