Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery Portland

What is Corrective Jaw Surgery?

Orthognathic (jaw) surgery is performed to correct conditions of the jaw and face related to structure, growth, sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, and cleft palate. These conditions can be congenital or injury related. Often, surgery is done to correct orthodontic problems that cannot be easily treated with braces alone.

There is no need to suffer from headaches, speech problems, chewing, or biting problems due to jaw pain.

Who Needs Orthognathic Jaw Surgery?

People who can benefit from orthognathic surgery include those with an improper bite or jaws that are positioned incorrectly. Jaw growth is a gradual process and, in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates. The result can be a host of problems that can affect chewing function, speech, long-term oral health, and appearance. Injury to the jaw and birth defects can also affect jaw alignment. While orthodontics alone can correct many bite problems if only the teeth are involved, orthognathic surgery may be required if the jaw also needs repositioning.

Difficulty in the following areas should be evaluated:

  • Chewing, biting or swallowing
  • Speech problems
  • Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
  • Open bite
  • Protruding jaw
  • Breathing problems

Any of these problems can exist at birth or may be acquired after birth as a result of hereditary or environmental influences or, trauma to the face. Before any treatment begins, Dr. Malmquist will complete a comprehensive examination with x-rays and consultation.

Technology and Orthognathic Surgery

Drs. Jay and Michael Malmquist will use advanced computer techniques and three-dimensional models to show you exactly how your surgery will be approached. Using comprehensive facial radiographs and video stills, we can show you how your bite will be improved and even give you an idea of how you could look after surgery. This helps you understand the surgical process and the extent of the treatment prescribed, and to see the benefits of orthognathic surgery.

EXCELLENT STAFF--VERY COURTEOUS AND PROFESSIONAL. DR. J APPLIED TWO IMPLANTS IN 2004 AND I WAS SO PLEASED WITH THE PROCEDURE THAT WHEN I NEEDED ADDITIONAL IMPLANTS I DID NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT HIS OFFICE. HE AND HIS STAFF HAVE MAINTAINED THEIR DESIRE FOR PERFECTION. I FEEL VERY CONFIDANT IN RECOMMENDING HIM TO MY FRIENDS.

I have Multiple Myeloma and was on Zometa, which is a chemo given to harden the bones to make it more difficult for the cancer to get a foothold. I had been off it for about a year when I started getting sores in my mouth. These turned out to be a small piece of bone growing and breaking through the skin and it turned out to be caused by the Zometa. I had first gone to my family dentist who in turn sent me to a "specialist". This particular Oral Surgeon actually caused more problems. Then a friend recommended me to another dentist who in turn sent me to Dr. Michael Malmquist. He knew right off what caused it and what was needed to treat it. It's very important to find someone that knows what not to do as well as what to do. I'm very thankful that I was referred to Dr. Malmquist. I hope this can help others that are having the same problem.

To say I am thankful to have found this clinic is an understatement. My first visit Dr had me in tears finally feeling like I could get the help I needed for my jaw. I have spent 5+ years hurting and not knowing what else to do. I now have a plan and know that I will be well taken care of. To have a doctor sit with you and explain in detail what is going on and what needs to be done to help is a rarity. I felt comfortable and welcomed from the first time I walked in the door. Again, I can’t thank you guys enough.

I suffered for years from Migraines and pain in my TMJ. I went to several dentists and oral surgeons in WA state. Finally I was referred to Dr. Malmquist. When I met him I could barely open my mouth to fit my pinky in it and the pain was almost debilitating. He spent time reviewing my diagnosis, answering questions about the surgical procedure I would have. I did not need to think twice, I trusted him and knew he would help me. His financial planner in his office helped with my insurance issues, although ultimately my insurance denied the procedure after several appeals - it was money well spent! I had my TMJ surgery July of 2015. I have not had a migraine since then, I have no bells palsy, very minimal scarring, the range of motion of my jaw is great and I can open my mouth 32 mm. Most importantly; my life is so much better with no pain.

Dr. Malmquist replaces both of my jaw joints. They had been destroyed by arthritis and I could only open about an inch. The surgery was a complete success and I can now eat normally, speak clearly and have much needed dental repair completed. He is wonderful and so is his staff. It was a major surgery and I'm so thankful to Dr. Malmquist for his skill.

Do to an accident and infections I have had several surgeries to my TMJ's, lower jaw or orthognathic, Wisdom teeth removed, Dental implants, Total TM joint implants all several times. Including braces several times, skin grafts to repair receding gum line and removal of scare tissue to remove poor healing scars. I have worked with Dr. Malmquist for many many years by choice and would work with no one else. Though I have had to have consultations from many doctors though out the Portland area and around America. I would prefer to work with Dr. Jay Malmquist then with any one else in the country. Dr. Jay Malmquist is a wonderful doctor who answers questions and has always answered my questions honestly and quickly. He makes me feel that no question is stupid and that I count to him as more then just a dollar sign.

Previously, I had been a patient of Corporate Dentistry found in every small mall in America and have been paying the price of massive dental work ever since. Because of this history, I do not make references I do not 100% believe in. I am fortunate to have found Dr. Malmquist through references from a wonderful dentist that has helped me through the last ten years. I am now in my final steps to a healthy mouth (insert happy face). Recently, I have had bone grafts and am now in the process of three implants. Everything has gone better than expected and I am truly surprised how quickly I have healed. Dr. Malmquist offers you many options and the newest technology. I have, with complete confidence, recommend Dr. Malmquist to my son.
