What are wisdom teeth and why do they have to be removed?

Wisdom teeth, also known as the “third molars,” are the last four teeth that formed in the development of your dentition. In some cases, they simply do not form and are the most often missing tooth. However, when present, they erupt or attempt to erupt during the teenage formative years. Often they cause pain, damage to adjacent teeth, infection, form cysts or dental tumors are related to crowding of the other teeth. They have also been implicated in systemic disease later in life. Therefore, most third molars are recommended for removal. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) recommends the removal of these teeth during the formative years and has formulated a white paper on this topic – ask our office for more information!

Can I wait to have my wisdom teeth removed?

It is strongly recommended that you have your wisdom teeth removed during the teen or early adult years, preferably before age 25. This is the optimal time for removal because the jaw is “softer” and the roots of the teeth haven’t fully formed yet – this makes removal safer with less risk of complication.

What is the procedure like?

Wisdom teeth removal takes less than an hour, during which time you will be sleepy, relaxed, and totally pain-free. As the anesthesia wears off at home, you may have soreness in the surgical sites. We will send you home with medication instructions to maximize your comfort in the days following the procedure.
